Esprit de She Race Report

I love reading detailed race reports, so I write them as I like to read them. If you’d prefer something less wordy, here are some bullet points about the Esprit de She. Esprit de She is an awesome event! I did great–reached all my goals. The swim was harder than I expected. Cried at the finish line. Will do this race again and again. Now, if you want all the details about my experience here you go… Esprit de She This past Sunday, my friend Stacy and I competed in the 2016 Gildan Esprit de She triathlon in Naperville, IL. It… Read more »

Metabolism: How to boost it after weight loss

Misconception: if you lose a lot of weight your metabolism will tank. This misconception stems from the idea that the smaller we get, the less we can eat to maintain our weight. That fallacy is seemingly proven by the many incidences of people who lose an extreme amount of weight, or any amount of weight for that matter, and then promptly gain it back after they return to normal their old eating habits. The assumption is that we put our bodies into starvation mode to lose weight, but then our bodies can’t handle normal amounts of food, so the weight creeps back on…. Read more »

Turn Your Daydream Into a Destination

One year ago, I turned my daydream into a destination. One year ago, I wheezed going up the stairs. Today, I ran five miles nonstop and set a new PR. One year ago, my kids couldn’t have donuts in the house more than a few hours because they’d be devoured. Today, I threw away two uneaten donuts that had gone stale. One year ago, I couldn’t fully zip my size-20 jeans. Today, I easily zipped my size-6, fresh-out-of-the-dryer, skinny jeans. One year ago, I dealt with my emotions by pouring salt and sugar on them. Today, I made it through some tough things… Read more »

10 Tips for Living Fit in a Busy Life

I’ll be the first to admit that living fit is difficult when you’re smack dab in the middle of a busy life. You already know how busy I am. I have five kids still at home, a full-time job, church activities, grad school, book writing, blah, blah, blah. All the day’s minutes? They are used up. Your story may be different than mine, but I’m sure you feel no less busy than I do. So how do we find time to make things like working out and eating healthy food possible? I’ve learned by trial and error how to prioritize fitness in a way that doesn’t… Read more »

Not Your Average Joe, 5-Mile Race Report

Race Report: Not Your Average Joe, 5-Mile Race I feel like I’m smack in the middle of several races. We are on the fast track toward high school graduation, and it seems like there are events every evening, sometimes more than one, and it sure is keeping us busy. It’s an exciting time, but if you know me, you know it’s also a very weepy time. I’m just keeping my focus on one thing at a time. If I look too far down the road, well, you know…weeping commences. Did someone say commencement…? Waaaah! But a bright spot in the middle… Read more »

When your fitness plan and your body disagree

Sometimes your fitness plan and your body will disagree. Every workout, every meal, every effort is not going to pay off or feel as successful as the others. Trust me. I’ve been running, well some people like to call it that…it’s really more of a jog. In fact I think there are people out there who walk faster than I run. But I have been steadily increasing my endurance and my speed, so I know I’m headed in the right direction (pun intended). My Fitness Plan Well at the end of the week (when I wrote this) I had a couple of events happening. Friday… Read more »

Marathon weekend!

Okay, so I didn’t actually run a marathon for marathon weekend. But it felt like it! It started on Friday night with a seemingly innocent little 5K to kick off the Illinois Marathon weekend of races. I arrived at my starting corral (I picked the timing group that projected to finish in about 35:00) with plenty of time to spare before the race started, which gave tons of time to wait in the cold with 8000 other people, literally. Marathon Weekend Goals I told myself over and over that the most important thing for me to do was to pace myself… Read more »
